Lower Lake

Lower Lake
(Нижний Пруд)
(Name before 1946: Schloßteich)

Address: Nishnij Prud/Нижний Пруд
Address before 1946: Schloßteich

The Lower Lake has for centuries been one of the favourite spots for a walk by the citizens of Königsberg and Kalinigrad. Since 1810 the area has belonged to the city, and during the years still more facilities has been added, i.e. a lake promenade in 1906.

Today the lake is a true green oasis in the very city centre. Bridges cross the lake and on a tour around there are some memorials to be seen.

At the southeast shore by the Shevtjenko Street, ул. Шевченко, the zero kilometer mark of the city is found. It is the starting point of distances in the region, and various distances to world destinations can be seen.

Not far from this place the historic castle of Königsberg, Königsberg Schloß, shaped the city skyline with its buildings and distinct tower. The lake was known before as Castle Lake, Schloßteich.
