This monument is a memorial to the kosmonauts of the Kaliningrad Region and their world famous achievements. Most famous and written in the history books is Alexei Leonov who was the first man in the world to do a walk in space. It happened 18 March 1965 where he space walked for 12 minutes outside the space ship of the mission Voskhod 2, Восход 2.

 

The monument dates from 1980 and is also known as Aleksei Leonov Monument, Монумент Алексею Леонову.

 

Just east of the monument, in the first block towards the city centre, is the building of the historic German Scala cinema. Nowadays it is called Sarja, Заря (Prospekt Mira 41-43/проспект Мира 41-43).
